The “Free to Speak” Voice Rehabilitation Intensive is designed as a holistic program of voice rehabilitation and rapid, significant improvement in voice production for Spasmodic Dysphonia, Muscle Tension Dysphonia or any related serious voice dysfunction. Prognosis for improvement is considered to be excellent and eventual complete resolution of the problem is our goal.

Voice analysis and individual therapy is provided by a licensed, certified speech and language pathologist who has also experienced a year of Spasmodic Dysphonia and overcome this problem. The team consists of the professionals who worked with her during her recovery. Breathing analysis and individual treatment of breathing dysfunction is provided by a Master Breathing Specialist who also specializes in nutrition and bodywork. A standardized instrument is utilized to assess psychosocial dynamics, which is scored and interpreted by a licensed mental health provider. This includes a one hour individual session to discuss strategies of managing psychosocial issues. Group lectures and experiential therapies include Alexander technique methods, singing exercises, neurolinguistic programming, mindbody explorations and group interaction.

The program begins on Wednesday evening with assessments, and sessions are from 9:30am until 6pm each of the following four days. At least one evening social event is planned. Recreational activities are available for the evening as well. The facilitators understand that it is important to balance the intensity of the work with fun, laughter and relaxation as well as introspection and rest. Video taping is utilized throughout the clinic to serve as reinforcement and reminders of the progress made; and tapes are produced and provided to each participant.

To date, fully 100% of participants have expressed satisfaction and improvement with this program; and a standardized assessment of the level of voice handicap at six months indicates continued or at minimal, maintained improvement in most. We are excited about the early efficacy studies and feel we are continually improving the quality of the program. We commit to each participant the best of what we have to offer to see that “overcoming SD” is accomplished.
